The origin of the name Bormio is not certain but, whatever its possible origins might have been, all the root words are connected to the presence of the spa waters. For this reason, in the hypothesis that the first inhabitants of the upper valley (thus the founders of Bormio) arrived there from the north and were for this reason of German origin, it seems that Bormio derives from "warm" or "worm" to be exact, warm, like the spa waters which gush out from the seven springs which are to be found near the ancient centre.

The digestive liqueur, Amaro Braulio, takes its name from one of the mountains which form a crown around the valley of Bormio: on its slopes indeed most of the herbs, flowers, roots and berries that are used in the production of this healthy drink are picked. The origins of the Amaro Braulio are thus closely bound to its land. On the other hand, also the study and knowledge of the herbs and plants, their beneficial properties and their flavour, have faraway roots.

Also the wine-growing in Valtellina has a very ancient tradition behind it: Virgil even made reference in one of his works to the "retica vite" the wines from the Rhaetian area, while Leonardo da Vinci defined the robust, full-bodied Valtellina wines as "potenti e assai" (rather potent). From the working of the Nebbiolo marc, from the 5 sub-regions of Valtellina Superiore (Inferno, Sassella, Grumello, Vagella and Maroggia) the Peloni Company obtain many of their more prestigious distilled liqueurs..
